QUESTION

What should be subtracted from the sum of $\dpi{120} \fn_jvn \large \frac {1}{12}$   and  $\dpi{120} \fn_jvn \large \frac {1}{8}$  so that the difference is $\dpi{120} \fn_jvn \large \frac {1}{18}$  ?

$\frac {1}{12}+\frac {1}{8}=\frac {2+3}{24}=\frac {4}{5}$

The required fraction  $\frac {5}{24}-\frac {1}{18}$

$=\frac {3\times 5-4\times1}{72}=\frac {15-4}{72}=\frac {11}{72}$

$\therefore \: \: \frac {11}{72}$     should be subtracted from the sum of  $\frac {1}{12}$  and  $\frac {1}{8}$   to get  $\frac {1}{18}$.
