QUESTION

BD and CE are the bisectors of large angle B;;and;;angle C of an iosceles triangle ABC with AB = AC. Prove that BD = CE.

EXPLANATION

Text

AB = AC

therefore   angle ACB=angle ABC        [Angles opposite to equal sides of isosceles Delta ABC]

rightarrow  2angle 2=2angle 1                     [because CE and BD are the bisectors of angle C and angle B, respectively]

rightarrow  angle 2=angle 1

rightarrow BP = PC                     .....(i)   [Side oppoite to equal angles of Delta ABC]

In DeltaBPE and DeltaCPD,

      BP = CP                             [proved above]

       angle EBP=angle DCP   [Proved above]

       angle BPE=angle CPD   [Vertically opposite angles]

therefore   Delta BPEcongDelta CPD    [ASA axiom]

therefore       PE = PD                        [CPCT]

rightarrow     PD = PE                     ....(iii)

Adding (i) and (ii), we get

    BP + PD = PC + PE                  rightarrow   BD = CE
