Peristaltic Movement

Peristaltic Movement:

Peristaltic movement is the contraction and relaxation of the muscles in the food pipe which brings the food down the pipe and into the stomach. It is necessary to move the food in a regulated manner along the digestive tube so that it can be passed properly in each part. The muscles involved are involuntary muscles. The lining of the canal has muscles that contract rhythmically in order to push the food forward. These rhythmic contractions are known as peristaltic movements.

In case of small intestine their occur stimulation of smooth muscle tissues for the removal of food particles. This contraction travels from the restorative point on both directions known as intestinal Peristalsis.
