Difference Between Xylem and Phloem

Difference between Xylem and Phloem vessels

Xylem

Phloem

It consists of tracheids , vessels, xylem parenchyma, xylem fibres.

Have dead long and hollow vessels

It consists of sieve tubes, companion cells, phloem parenchyma and phloem fibres.

Have living thin tubes placed end to end.

Absence of any cross wall.

Presence of sieve plates at the ends of sieve tube cells.

Provides cell wall thickenings

Sieve tube is filled with cytoplasm

xylem fibres are smaller

Prevents vessels from collapsing.

Phloem fibres are larger.

Companion cells contain nuclei and control activities of sieve tubes.

Movement of water is in upward direction from soil to leaves.

Transport of substances in all directions to all parts of the plant.

The only living cell is xylem parenchyma.

It carries mainly water and minerals.

Except phloem fibres all cells are living.

It carries organic compounds such as sugar and amino acids.
