Property of Carbon Compounds- Multiple Bond Formation

Multiple Bond Formation

Due to its small size carbon has a strong tendency to form multiple bonds (double and triple bonds) by sharing more than one electron pair with its own atoms or with the atoms of some other elements like oxygen, nitrogen, sulphur etc. As a result, it can from  a variety of compounds that are exceptionally stable.

When  two atoms share one electron pair between each other, then they are said to be bonded by single covalent bond, denoted by single dash joining the atoms. Carbon form single bond with different mono-valent atoms like: H, Cl etc. to form alkanes and different compounds.

E.g. –  CH_4, CCl_4, C_2H_6 etc.
