Information conveyed by a chemical equation:

  • It gives the symbols and formulae of the reactants and products.
  • It tells us which substance or substances are taking part in the reaction and which product or products are being obtained. For example the equation tells that calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce calcium chloride, water and carbon dioxide.
