Right to Information

Right to Information: An Example of Best Political Reform The best laws are those which empower people to carry out democratic reforms.This law was passed by Parliament of India on 15 June 2005 and came fully into force on 12 October 2005.

The Right to Information Act is a good example of a law that empowers the people to find out what is happening in government and acts as a watchdog of democracy. Such a law helps to control corruption and supplements the existing laws that banned corruption and imposed strict penalties. Right to Information is an act of the Parliament of India which sets out the rules and procedures regarding citizens' right to information. It replaced the former Freedom of Information Act, 2002. 

Provision of the Act RTI Act, 2005 provides that subject to the provisions of the Act, 2005, any citizen has got a right to have any information from any public office of the Central Government or the State Governments.

An Example of RTI Act : For about two years, Suresh made rounds of the panchayat office to get her grandfather's death certificate. Every time, the official there, would tell her to come later or pay a bribe of Rs 500 to get the work done. Suresh, a resident of the XYZ village, needed the certificate so that her grandmother could apply for the widow pension scheme. Finally, Suresh filed a query under the (RTI) right to Information Act . She got the certificate within eight days. So Is the the power of RTI act , we just need to stay aware about it .
