Secular State

Concept Explanation

Secular State

A secular state is one that has no official religion and treats all religions equally. In such a state, no religion is given special treatment or official status by the government. This means that people of all religions (or no religion) are free to follow their beliefs without any interference or favoritism from the state.

India is a secular country, which means that it does not have an official state religion, unlike countries such as Sri Lanka (Buddhism), Pakistan (Islam), or England (Christianity). The framers of the Indian Constitution understood the dangers of communalism (conflict or tension between religious communities) and wanted to ensure that all religions were treated equally. That is why they chose a secular model for India.
