Pre-Modern World

Meaning of Globalisation :Globalisation means integration of markets in the global economy, leading to the increased interconnectedness of national economies.Globalisation is an economic system, which is hardly 50 years old. But the making of the global world has taken many more years. To understand this history, we need to understand the history of trade, migration, people's search for work, the movement of capital etc. We need to understand the different phases through which our world has emerged.

THE PRE-MODERN WORLD: Human societies have steadily become more interlinked. From ancient times, travellers, traders, priests and pilgrims travelled vast distances for various reasons, like, to gain knowledge, more opportunities, religious or spiritual fulfilment or to escape from ill-treatment.

  • They carry with themselves goods, money, ideas, skills, values, inventions and even germs and diseases.
  • From 3000 BCE, the Indus Valley Civilisation was linked with West Asia.
  • The long-distance spread of disease-carrying germs occurred as back as the 7th century.
  • Cowries, a form of currency from the Maldives, was found in China and East Africa. By the 13th century, a strong link was established between the countries.
  • Silk Routes Link the World: The silk routes are good examples of pre-modern trade and cultural links between the distant parts of the world, i.e. línking Asia with Europe and North Africa. These ancient routes were called silk routes, because along these routes, the silk cargoes from China were carried to different regions of Europe. Chinese pottery as well as Indian spices and textiles from India and South-East Asia were carried through these routes. In return, precious metals like gold and silver came from Europe to Asia.

Along these routes, the Buddhist preachers, Christian missionaries and later on, Muslim preachers travelled. These routes proved to be a great source of trade and cultural links between distant parts of the world .

Silk Route :- The route taken by traders to carry silk cargoes from China to the West .
