Concept Explanation

Gibberellins

Kurosawa, a Japanese botanist, discovered gibberellin while investing the rice foolish seedling disease in which spindly seedlings are formed due to GA like compounds produced by the fungus (Gibberella fujikuroi) infecting the plant. Gibberellins are group of growth promoters. The best known naturally occurring gibberellin is Gibberellic acid.

Function of Gibberellins :

  • It induces stem elongation by increasing the length of internodes.
  • Gibberellin suppresses "genetic dwarfism" and causes the pant to grow to the normal height.
  • It promotes flowering in long day plants under unfavourable short day conditions.
  • It is much more potent in inducing parthenocarpy and enhancement of fruit yield in grapes and tomatoes.
