Heterotrophic Nutrition

Concept Explanation

Heterotrophic Nutrition

‘Heterotroph means other nutrition. All heterotrophs depend on the other organism for their food, they are called consumers. All animals and non green plants like fungi come under this category. Consumers which consume herbs and other plants are called ‘herbivores’ and those which consume animals are called ‘carnivores’. After taking complex organic materials as food, heterotrophs break them into simpler molecules with the help of ‘enzymes’ and utilize them for their own metabolism. Depending upon the mode of living and mode of intake of food, heterotrophs may be parasitic, saprophytic and holozoic. Heterotrophic plants are of the following types:-

  • Parasitic plants: A parasitic plant is a plant that derives some or all of its food and nutrition from another living plant like Cuscuta.
  • Saprophytic plants: Saprophytic plants are those types of the plant who get their energy from the dead or decaying material of the plant like fungus and bacteria.
  • Symbiotic plantsCertain plants live in association with other organism, share food and other resources. Both the types mutually gain from each other. Such plants are called symbiotic plants like algae and fungus.
  • Insectivorous plants or Carnivorous plantshere are the plants that derive some or most of their nutrients by trapping and consuming animals mainly insects like pitcher plant.
  • Holozoic NutritionHolozoic nutrition can be defined as a method of nutrition which involves the ingestion of some complex organic substances that may be in the solid or the liquid state.
