India as a Federal Country

India as a federal country: India had emerged as an independent nation after a painful and bloody partition. Early after independence, several princely states became a part of the country. The Constitution declared India as a Union of States. Although, it did not use the word federation, the Indian Union is based on the principles of federalism.

India a federal country because of the following reasons:

The Indian Constitution contains three lists which contain subjects in which the Union and the State Governments may form/constitute laws. Only central government can make laws in the Union List and state government in the state list. 

Meaning of Federal Country -  A federal country or system of government is one in which the different states or provinces of the country have important powers to make their own laws and decisions. Federal also means belonging or relating to the national government of a federal country rather than to one of the states withinit.
