Consumer Forums: The Consumer Movement in India has led to the formation of various organisations locally known as Consumer Forums or Consumer Protection Councils. They guide consumers on how to file cases in the Consumer Court. Many times, they also represent individual consumer in the Consumer Courts. These voluntary organisations also receive financial support from the government for creating awareness among people. An example of such forums can be seen in residential colonies. In such colonies Resident Welfare Associations is made. If any unfair trade practice is performed with association members, they take up the case on their behalf.
Consumer Forums are special courts for consumers who buy or avail services. Consumer forums works under/as per Consumer Protection Act 1986 (CPA 1986). Any customer who falls under definition of consumer under CPA 1986 can lodge his/her complaint in forums. There are 3 types of forums and fourth top most is Supreme court.
Following are the importance or functions of consumer forums:-(i) They guide consumers on how to file cases in the consumer court.(ii) On many occasions, they also represent individual consumers in the consumer courts.(iii) These voluntary organisations also receive financial support from the government for creating awareness among the people.(iv) It works for the protection of the consumer rights.(v) It imparts knowledge about consumer rights by writing articles and getting it published in newspaper.
All forums/courts has right to listen or reject the case if they find complaint is not suitable or not under their jurisdiction (CPA 1986).
These forums are the only courts where you do not need advocate and can fight your case yourself until & unless you have knowledge of your case and little bit law (which you can get information on internet easily). These forums are more friendly as compare to civil/criminal courts as judge know that consumer in India is still not aware of many things/rights.
