Colonialism and After: The novel flourished in Europe at a time when it was colonising the rest of the world. The influence of Colonialism was clear in the writings of Daniel Defoe, Joseph Conrad etc.

Novels Contributed Colonialism: Most writers of the time saw colonialism as atural. Colonised people were shown as primitive, barbaric.Colonial rule was considered necessary to civilise them, to make them fully human, Later, in the 20th century, that writers like Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) wrote novels showed the darker side of the colonial rule. 19th century English novelists like Reynolds, F Marion Crawford and Marie Corelli were very popular in Colonial India.

Their novels were generally historical romances, adventure stories and sensation novels. There novels were easily available and were translated and adapted to several Indian languages.Keynold's Pickwick Abroad (1839) was more popular in India than Dickens Original Pickwick Papers (1837).
