Current Electron Relationship

Electric current is produced due to the flow of electrons. It is defined as the rate of flow of electrons through a cross section of a conductor. Let us derive a relationship between current and the number of electrons flowing through the conductor.

We know that

I=frac{q}{t}               ...............(1)

also

q= ne           ................(2)

Combining 1 and 2 we get

I= frac{q}{t}= frac{ne}{t}

This is a relationship between amount of current flowing with the number of electrons flowing.

Illustration: A total of large 6times10^{46} electrons flow through a current carrying conductor when connected through an external power supply for 20s. Find the value of current in the conductor.

Solution: Given, Total number of electrons,

large n=6times10^{46} electrons

Time, t = 20 s, Current, I = ?

large I=frac{ne}{t}=frac{6times10^{46}times1.6times10^{-19}}{20}     large [because e=1.6times10^{-19}C]

large =frac{6times1.6times10^{-19+46}}{20}

large =frac{6times1.6times10^{27}}{2times10}

large =3times1.6times10^{27-1}

large =4.8times10^{26}; A

Thus, the current through the conductor is large =4.8times10^{26}A.
