Adding altogether means we will count all the objects in both the boxes
In the figure below first box has 3 cats and second box has 1 cat and altogether we have 4 cats in third box.
So we can say that
3 cats and 1 cat is equal to 4 cats
Similarly
1 rat and 2 rats is equal to 3 rats
In the figure below first box has 1 rat and second box has 2 rats and altogether we have 3 rats in third box.
