Adding Using Number Line

Number Line:

A horizontal line that has divisions marked at equal intervals. The marking on a scale represent number line.

Steps to find sum of two numbers using number line:

To find the sum of two numbers using a number line we will follow the following steps

1. We will draw an arc covering the number of divisions equal to the first number.

2. Then from the ending point of the first arc we will draw an arc covering the number of divisions equal to the second number.

3. The end point of the second arc shows the sum of two numbers.

In the figure below shows the sum of 2 + 6 on a number line   The first arc covers 2 divisions as the first number is 2. The second arc starts from the endpoint of the first arc and covers 6 divisions as the second number is 6. The end point of the second arc is at 8. So the sum of 2 and 6 is 8.

So we can say that

2 divisions  and 6 divisions is equal to 8 divisions.

Similarly

3 divisions  and 3 divisions is equal to 6 divisions.

The first arc covers 3 divisions as the first number is 3. The second arc starts from the endpoint of the first arc and covers 3 divisions as the second number is also 3. The end point of the second arc is at 6. So the sum of 3 and 3 is 6.
