Adding altogether means we will count all the objects in both the boxes
In the figure below first box has 1 cat and second box has 1 cat and counting all the cats we have 2 cats in third box.
So we can say that
1 + 1 = 2
Similarly
3 + 1 = 4
In the figure below first box has 3 rats and second box has 1 rat and counting all rats we have 4 rats in third box.
