Concept Explanation

Subtraction By Crossing

Subtraction by crossing means we will put a cross on the objects equal to the second digit and the remaining objects is the answer.

Steps to perform the subtraction:

  • Draw objects equal to the first digit
  • Put a cross on the objects equal to the second digit
  • The remaining objects is the answer.
  • For example let us perform the following subtraction

    8 - 3 = ?

In the figure below we have 8 balloons as the first digit is 8. there is a cross on the 3 balloons as the second digit is 3

Now there is 5 balloons which does not have a cross.

    So the answer is 5

    8 - 3 = 5

    Similarly

let us perform the following subtraction

    8 - 7 = ?

In the figure below we have 8 balloons as the first digit is 8. there is a cross on the 7 balloons as the second digit is also 7

Now there is 1 balloon which does not have a cross.

    So the answer is 0

    8 - 7 = 1
