Subtraction By Crossing Digits Less Than 5

Subtraction by crossing means we will put a cross on the objects equal to the second digit and the remaining objects is the answer.

Steps to perform the subtraction:

  • Draw objects equal to the first digit
  • Put a cross on the objects equal to the second digit
  • The remaining objects is the answer.
  • For example let us perform the following subtraction

    4-3 = ?

In the figure below we have 4 balloons as the first digit is 4. there is a cross on the 3 balloons as the second digit is 3

Now there is 1 balloon which does not have a cross.

    So the answer is 1

    4-3 = 1

    Similarly

let us perform the following subtraction

    3 - 1 = ?

In the figure below we have 3 balloons as the first digit is 3. there is a cross on the 1 balloon as the second digit is 1

Now there is 2 balloons which does not have a cross.

    So the answer is 2

    3 - 1 = 2
