In statement sum we are given a statement. We have to analyse the statement and then take appropriate action.
In the statements when phrases like 'How Many in all?' ' or ' Total numbers of items' or 'Items altogether' etc are given we have to preform addition. Moreover, in addition statements the answer is always more than the addends.
In the statements when phrases like 'How Many are left?' ' or ' How many more items' or 'How many less Items' etc are given we have to preform subtraction. Moreover, in subtraction statements the answer is always less than one of the numbers..
1. Read the statement carefully
2. Find the values that are given
3. Find the quantity which is required
4. Then perform the process to reach the desired result.
Let us consider the following example;
There are 987 fruits in a basket. Out of which 324 are mangoes and 452 are apples, and the rest are grapes. How many grapes are there?
1. We will first analyse the statement
2. We will find the values that are given
In the question it is given that
There are 987 fruits in a basket. Out of which 324 are mangoes and 452 are apples, and the rest are grapes.
So, No. of fruits in a basket = 987
No. of mangoes =.324
No. of apples = 452
3. We will find the quantity which is required
In the question it is asked that
How many grapes are there?
We know the total number of fruits also the number of mangoes and apples and the remaining are grapes.
So to find number of grapes we will first add the number of mangoes and apples.
Then to find the number of grapes we will subtract the sum of mangoes and apples from the total number of fruits.
We will perform addition to find the no. of mangoes and apples altogether.
324 + 452 = ?
We will perform the required operation
We will now perform subtraction to find the no. of grapes.
987 - 776 = ?
We will perform the required operation
Hence there are 211 grapes in the basket.
