Division By Repeated Subtraction

Concept Explanation

Division As Repeated Subtraction

Repeated subtraction means subtracting a series of same number or we can say subtracting same number more than one time.

For example

24 - 4 = 20 - 4 = 16 - 4 = 12 - 4 = 8 - 4 = 4 -4 =0

This is repeated subtraction.

We have to count the number of times 4 was subtracted from 24 to get a 0. On counting we get 6 times.

An easier and shorter method is to divide 24 by 4 that is

24 div 4 = 6

Illustration 1:  How many times 3 can be subtracted from 12 to get a 0?
