Proper Noun

Proper Noun: It is the name of a particular person or a place and always begins with a capital letter.

1. Most proper nouns stand alone, without an article, and are used with a singular verb:

  • Paris is the capital of France.
  • Is Mandarin a difficult language to learn?
  • 2. Some proper nouns are always used with the, which does not have a capital t:

  • The ship sailed across the Pacific Ocean.
  • Did you visit the Statue of Liberty?
  • 3. A few proper nouns are countable nouns, which can be used with a or an (or other determiners) and made plural:

  • Sally s brother is a Buddhist.
  • Several American and an Australian were killed in the crash.
  • 4. You can occasionally use other proper nouns like countable nouns:

  • The accident happened on a Monday.
  • There are three Michaels in my class at school.
