Monasteries

A house or place of residence occupied by a community of persons, especially monks

  • To begin with, both Jain and Buddhist monks went from place to place throughout the year, teaching people.
  • The only time they stayed in one place was during the rainy season, when it was very difficult to travel. Then their supporters built temporary shelters for them in gardens, or they lived in natural caves in hilly areas.
  •  A monastery generally includes a place reserved for prayer which may be a chapel, church, or temple.
  • Buddhist monasteries, known as vihāra in Pali and in Sanskrit, emerged sometime around the fourth century BCE
  • In India, Buddhist monasteries gradually developed into centres of learning where philosophical principles were developed
