Comparison of decimals: If there are two decimal numbers we can compare them. One number is either greater than, less than or equal to the other number. A decimal number is just a fractional number. Comparing 0.7 and 0.07 is clearer if we compared 7/10 to 7/100. The fraction 7/10 is equivalent to 70/100 which is clearly larger than 7/100.
To Compare Like Decimals: To compare like decimals follow these steps.
Step 1. Compare the whole part of the decimal number. The number with greater whole part will be greater. If they are same, then go to the second step.
Step 2. Compare the tenths place digits. The number will greater tenths digits will be greater. If they are also same, then go to the third step.
Step 3. Compare the digit in the hundredths place. The nummber with greater hundredths digit will be greater. If they are also equal, then compare the thousandths place and so on.
Illustration:: Compare 0.275, 2.34, 4.67, 2.24,
Solution: 4.67 > 2.34 > 2.24 > 0.275
To Compare Unlike Decimals: First Convert them into like decimals and follow the steps to comapre like decimals.
Illustration: To compare 4.2 and 4.27, first convert them to like decimals 4.20 and 4.27 > 4.20 (0.7 > 0)
