Figures With Multiple Line Symmetry

Multiple Line of Symmetry :

A figure in which more than two lines divide it into two identical parts such that when folded along those lines one part of the figure superimposes the other part is said to have multiple lines of symmetry.

Now let us consider the case of figure which have more that two lines of symmetry. A shape can have more than two line of symmetry. For example a rectangle has two lines of symmetry, an equilateral triangle has three lines of symmetry, and a square has four. A circle has an infinite number of lines of symmetry since it can be folded about any diameter.

Activity:

Now let us perform an activity to show that square has multiple lines of symmetry.

Step 1: Let us take a square piece of paper.

Step 2: Fold it into half vertically This shows one line of symmetry

Step 3: Then fold it into half horizontally  This shows second line of symmetry

Step 4:  Now, fold the paper into half along a diagonal . This diagonal shows third line of symmetry

Step 5: Open it and fold it into half along the other diagonal . This diagonal shows fourth line of symmetry.

Thus from the activity we find that a square has horizontal line of symmetry, Vertical line of symmetry and two more lines of symmetry one along each diagonal . Thus, a square has four lines of symmetry as shown below:
