Incineration

Concept Explanation

Incineration

Incineration is a waste treatment process that involves the combustion of substances contained in waste materials. Industrial plants for waste incineration are commonly referred to as waste-to-energy facilities. Incineration and other high-temperature waste treatment systems are described as "thermal treatment".

  • Hospital waste is hazardous to health if dumped in the open. So, it needs to be disposed of very carefully. Solid wastes like syringes and needles, which are used in hospitals, are burnt at a high temperature in a special kind of furnace called ‘incinerator’.
  • Garbage, when burnt, turns into ash, which is then safely disposed of in a landfill.
  • People usually practice burning of waste like dried leaves, plastics, glass etc. Burning of these material results in release of harmful gases. We should try to stop such practices.
  • Farmers too often burn husk, dried leaves and part of the crop plants in there fields after harvesting. The farmers should take steps to convert these agricultural wastes into useful compost.
  • Incinerator, container for burning refuse, or plant designed for large-scale refuse combustion.
  • Modern incinerators include air pollution control equipment like fabric filters and scrubbers to remove gaseous contaminants.
