Concept Explanation

Solubility

Solubility : The amount of a solute in grams dissolved in 100 grams of a solvent to make a saturated solution is called the solubility.

Effect of Temperature on Solubility: Solubility increases with increase in temperature. A given amount of solid solute dissolves more quickly in hot solvent than in cold solvent. For example: salt dissolves very fast in hot water than in cold water. That is why while making lemonade, sugar is added before adding ice.

The quantity of a substance that can be dissolved in hot water is much more than in cold water. Solubility of gases in water decreases with increase in temperature.

Factors which increase the solubility are:

  • Stirring: A solute dissolves faster in a solvent when it is stirred.
  • Solute in Powdered Form: A solute dissolves faster in a solvent when it is in the powdered form.
