Evaporation Technique

The process of conversion of liquid into its vapour is called evaporation. It is used to separate the soluble solid from the liquid. In this method, the mixture is heated. The liquid part of the mixture evaporates leaving behind the solid part. We can separate common salt dissolved in water by evaporation.

Example:

Lemon Juice which is a solution of lemon juice in water can be separated by evaporation. Water evaporates from the container leaving behind lemon juice. The process of conversion of a solid into vapour without converting into liquid state is called sublimation.

Example:

  • Sulphur can be recovered from its solution in carbon disuiphide by evaporating the carbon disulphide.
  • The matka, a traditional Indian porous clay container is used to store water. Water gets cooled in this Matka due to the process of evaporation.
  • Salt is prepared from sea water by evaporation. Common salt may be recovered from its aqueous solution by evaporating the water. Common salt present in sea water is usually obtained by this method. Sea water is collected in large shallow ponds on the seashore and left in the sun as such for some days. Water gets vaporized slowly. White crystals of common salt are left behind in the ponds.

The process to form Salt from Sea Water:

  • Seawater has salt dissolved in it.
  • To obtain salt, seawater is collected in a pit and allowed to stand for sometime.
  • Sun’s heat evaporates the water. Salt, which is left behind, is collected.
  • After purification salt is ready to use.
