Division of Decimals

Division of Decimals: The number we divide by is called the divisor. To divide decimal numbers, Multiply the divisor by as many 10's as necessary until we get a whole number. Remember to multiply the dividend or numerator by the same number of 10's.There can be different cases when we have to divide decimal numbers:

Case 1: Division by a whole number: To divide a decimal number by a whole number, we first divide them as whole numbers. Then place the decimal point in the quotient as in the decimal number.

Illustration:: large 8.4div 4=2.1

Case 2: Division by 10 or powers of 10. To divide a decimal number by 10,100 or 1000, shift the digits in the decimal number to the left by as many places as there are zeros over 1, to get the quotient. So,

  •  large 23.9 div10 = 2.39
  • large 23.9div100=0.239
  • large 23.9div1000=0.0239
  • Case 3: Division by a decimal number. While dividing two decimal numbers, first shift the decimal point to the right by equal number of places in both, to convert the divisor to a whole number. We followthe following steps

    Step 1: Move the decimal point in the divisor to the right to make it a whole number.

    Step 2: Move the decimal point in the dividend the same number of places.

    Step 3: Divide as in the case of whole numbers and put the decimal point directly above decimal point in the the dividend.

    Example: Divide 15 by 0.2

    Solution: Let us multiply the 0.2 by 10, which shifts the decimal point out of the way: 0.2 × 10 = 2 . Also multiply 10 to the numerator 15 x 10 = 150

    large frac{150}{2}=75    The number we divide by is called the divisor.
