Magnetism

Concept Explanation

Magnetism

It is a fundamental force in nature which may be repulsive or attractive. Earth itself acts  as a magnet. We are all surrounded by magnets since electrons and protons act as tiny magnets. We have natural magnets hence we can say that magnetic behavior can be shown even by bodies having no net charge. Hence, it is different from electrostatic force.

The leading scientist of 19th century Hans Christian Oersted in 1820, discovered that a compass needle got deflected when a metallic conductor carrying current is placed nearby it. According to him deflection of compass was due to the magnetic field produced by the electric current. Any change in the direction of current will show a variation in deflection. Thus, electricity and magnetism are related phenomena to each other.
