Chemical Effects of Electric Current

Electricity can bring about chemical changes, so it is said to have chemical effects. The breaking up of water into hydrogen and oxygen is actually a' chemical decomposition' reaction caused by passing an electric current through impure water.

Michael Faraday, a well- known British experimental physicist, began his experiments on the passage of electricity through liquids (electrolyte) in 1834. He observed interesting chemical changes (effects) taking place when an electric current pass through an ionic solution.
