Reaction of Acids and Bases

Concept Explanation

Reaction of Acids and Bases

Reaction of Acid and Base to produce salt and water is called neutralization reaction.

In neutralization reaction heat is always evolved. Therefore it is an exothermic reaction

.Acid+Baserightarrow Salt+ Water+Heat,

  e.g.,

Hydrochloric;acid+Sodium;hydroxiderightarrow Sodium;chloride+water

HCl+NaOHrightarrow NaCl+H_{2}O

Application of neutralization reaction:

  • In indigestion: Our stomach releases hydrochloric acid which helps in digestion. But sometimes overproduction of this acid takes place which causes acidity in our stomach. This acidity is painful and hence must be removed. Thus antacid tablets containing magnesium hydroxide are given to the person to neutralize the effect of excess acid in the stomach.
