Figures With One Line of Symmetry

Line of Symmetry :

If a line divides a given figure into two or more identical halves , then we say that the given figure is symmetrical about that line and the line is called the axis of symmetry or line of symmetry. Each one of the figures shown below is symmetrical about the dotted line and the dotted line is its line (or axis) of symmetry .

When a figure is folded along a line such a way that the two parts exactly fit on top of each other, then the figure is said to have a line symmetry. Line of symmetry is the line which divides figure into two identical parts and these are mirror image of each others.

It is not necessary that each figure has a line of symmetry or we cab say a figure may or may not have a line of symmetry .

Types of Line of Symmetry :

We have two types of line of symmetry here :

  • Vertical line of symmetry
  • Horizontal line of symmetry
  • Vertical Line of Symmetry :

In a figure if a vertical line divides it into identical parts, then line acts as an axis of the shape. Thus the axis which divides the shape into two identical halves, vertically, is called a vertical line of symmetry. The mirror image of the other half of the shape can be seen in a vertical or straight standing position. Some of the alphabets such as A, H, M, O, U, V, W, T, Y can be divided vertically in symmetry.

    Horizontal Line of Symmetry :

In a figure if a horizontal line divides it into identical parts, then line acts as an axis of the shape. Thus the symmetry line or horizontal axis of a shape which divides the shape into two identical halves is known as horizontal line of symmetry. That means the axis here crosses across the shape to cut it into two equal parts. The English alphabets such as B, C, H, E, are the examples of horizontal symmetry.

Figure With One line of Symmetry:

A figure having only one line of symmetry is known as as a figure with one line of symmetry.. This line of symmetry can be horizontal, vertical or can be align at any angle.
