Sound needs a medium to propagate or travels.Sound travels through solid liquid and gas but the sound does not pass through vaccum.
Sounds are made in a variety of ways but all involves vibrations. A tuning fork produces a sound as it vibrates back and forth, a guitar string moves up and down producing a sound when it is plucked.Sound needs a medium to propagate. Velocity of sounds is maximum in solids and least in gases.
