Gerunds - Object To Preposition

Concept Explanation

Gerunds - Object To Preposition

Gerund and Preposition:

1)  A preposition is always followed by a gerund not by an infinitive. This is a good rule. It has no exceptions. If we want to use a verb after a preposition, it must be a gerund. It is impossible to use an infinitive after a preposition. e.g.

  • He is fond of fishing.
  • She is good at swimming.
  • He is too afraid of losing.
  • I am tired of arguing
  • 2) Some verbs followed by preposition/adverb take gerund. The most common of such are : be for/against, care for, give up, keep on, leave off, look forward to, put off, see about, take to etc. e.g.

  • We do not care for standing in queues.
  • We are looking forward to meeting you in the party.
