Ratio

Ratio:

Ratio are used in comparing two things or values  which are similar to each other in terms of units. Ratio is the relationship, or comparison, of one quantity to another. In  other words we can say that ratio indicates how many times one quantity is contained in the  another. quantity For example, if there are ten boys and seven girls  in a group of students, then the ratio of boys and girls is ten to seven. And the ratio of girls to boys is seven to ten. A ratio can be written in three different ways viz, x to y, x: y and  x/y

but read as the ratio of x to y.

We can also say that ratio is a fraction that shows how many times one quantity is of the other.

In the ratio x : y, x is the antecedent and y is the consequent.

For example:

1.    The ratio of 3 to 7 is 3: 7.

2.    Nancy has 40 pencils and Smith has 80  pencils To find out the ratio of Nancy's pencil to Simth's pencil we need to divide the number of pencils  of Nancy  to Smith.

     frac {Number;of;Nancy;pencil}{Number;of;Smith;pencil} = frac{40}{80}=frac{1}{2}

       Therefore, the ratio between Nancy's pencil to Smith's pencil is 1:2
