Lysosomes 

These are sac like, small, spherical, single membrane-bound vesicles contain digestive enzymes. These are a kind of waste disposal system of the cell.  Lysosomes are formed by the Golgi complex. They occur in animal cells only.

Functions of Lysosomes:

  • They help in breaking down (digesting) large molecules of the cell.
  • They work in defence against bacteria and viruses. They remove bacteria or any foreign material entering into the cell by breaking it into smaller pieces   through powerful digestive enzymes.
