Controlling Body Temperature

Concept Explanation

Controlling Body Temperature

  • Digestion, growth and repair, respiration and manufacture of hormones are some of the chemical reactions taking place inside your body.
  • The heat they produce as a by product maintains your body temperature regardless of the temperature of your surroundings. As we can maintain a constant body temperature, you are said to be endothermic.
  • However, if the temperature inside your body was to  increase by more than a few degrees above 37°C, your metabolism would stop, and you would die.
  • If your body temperature fell below 37°C, your metabolism would slow down.
  • Internal temperature of our body is regulated by a part of our brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus checks our current temperature and compares it with the normal temperature of about 37°C. If our temperature is too low, the hypothalamus makes sure that the body  generates and maintains heat.
