The First World War and The Russian Empire: In 1914, the First World War started between two European alliances — Germany, Austria and Turkey (the Central powers) and France, Britain and Russia (later Italy and Romania also). Each country had a global empire. So, the war was fought outside Europe as well as in Europe. Initially, the war was popular in Russia and the people supported Tsar Nicholas II. The Tsar had decided to take the command of the Russian army into his own hand. So, he left his court and went to the battlefield. Anti-German sentiments became strong. The Tsarina Alexandra’s German origins and her advisor Rasputin’s influence made the autocracy unpopular.
Russian army participate in the first world war to create condition for the fall of the Russian autocracy.
Russia joined the allies in the first world war in 1914 A.D. she gained some success in the beginning but after 1915 A.D. she had to face defeat after defeat. it become difficult for the Russians to fight due to shortage of war- material and food stuffs . The untrained farmers were sent to the front in large numbers to fight in the war. as such Russia suffered heavy loses both in army and money .by February 1917 about 6,00,000 Russian soldiers had been killed in the war. the shortage of food grains and clothes created a great unrest among the people.
Consequently there was a great crisis in Russia the whole machinery of the state was out of gear and the national life was completely paralysed . so the only solution was the revolution against the autocratic rule if the czar.
