Phylum Chordata
All animals which have a notochord at some stage of life are called chordates. The notochord is a flexible, rodlike structure running through the length of the body of chordates, or animals of the phylum Chordata. It lies below the nerve chord and provides support to the body. In higher chordates, or vertebrates, the notochord is replaced by the vertebral column. In addition, all chordates show the following characteristics at some stage of life.
Chordata
This phylum is divided into three subphyla—Urochordata, Cephalochordata and Vertebrata. Urochordates and cephalochordates are called lower chordates, or protochordates. Vertebrates are the most developed animals.
