Soil

Soil: The top layer of the earth’s surface, in which plants grow, is called soil. Soil is a natural resource made up of a complex mixture of several components. Rock particles make up a large part of soil. The following are the main constituents of soil.

Properties of soil:

1. Texture:  The texture of the soil depends upon the relative amount of particles. Clay has the smallest sized particles. Because of very small size, the clay is felt smooth.

2. Absorption of water :  Soil have the property to hold water . Sandy soil has less capacity to  hold water than the clayey soil.

3. Moisture: Soil always retain a small amount of water around it in the form of moisture. It helps the plant to survive in the non availability of water.

4. Soil color : Soil are of different colours. They are red, white and black in color. The red color of the soil due to  the presence of iron oxide.The black color soil is rich in minerals and humus.

5. Soil pH: Soil can be acid, alkaline or neutral. Some palnts grow in acidic soil such as potatoes and kumara.

6. Percolation of water : The process of water passes down slowly through the soil is called percolation of water. The water percolate differently through different type of soils.
