Methods of Soil Conservation

Methods of Soil Conservation: The wearing away or removal of soil from the land is called soil erosion. Water and wind are particularly effective in moving soil from one place to another. Rainfall loosens soil particles that can then be transported away by moving water. Wind loosens soil and blows it away, particularly if the soil is barren and dry. Soil erosion is a natural process that can be significantly accelerated by human activities. Erosion causes a major loss of soil fertility by transporting organic matter and nutrients that are essential part of the soil. Abundant plant cover significantly reduces soil erosion.

The soil conservation practices are:

  • Alternate cropping
  • Growing of legumes
  • Application of optimum manures and fertilizers
  • Protection of soil erosion from wind and water by growing protective plants to cover the soil surface.
  • conservation of air, water, soil, animal and plant resources should be practised as per the rule and regulation laid down by the government.
  • Soil is an important element for agriculture. Soil conservation practices are those tools the farmer can use to prevent soil degradation and build organic matter. These practices include: crop rotation, reduced tillage, mulching, cover cropping and cross-slope farming. farmers to increase soil organic matter content, soil structure and rooting depth. This will greatly help in soil erosion and retain soil fertility.
