Government Steps for Protection of Flora and Fauna

Governmental Steps for Protection of Flora and Fauna: To protect animals and plants life, the government has taken many steps.Some of these are as follows

(i) 14 biosphere reserves have been set-up in the country to protect flora and fauna. Four out of these, the Sunderbans in the West Bengal, Nanda Devi in Uttarakhand, the Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu, the Nilgiris (Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) have been included in the world network of biosphere reserves.

  • (ii) Financial and technical assistance is provided to many botanical gardens by the government since 1992.

    (iii) Many other ecodevelopmental projects have been introduced such as Project Tiger, Project Rhino, Project Great Indian Bustard, etc.

    (iv) 89 national parks,490  wildlife sanctuaries and zoological gardens are set-up to take care of Natural heritage.

    But in spite of all these steps, all of us must realise the importance of the natural ecosystem for our own survival. Then only indiscriminate destruction of natural environment will be put to an immediate end.

    Note According to current data, 18 biosphere reserves have been set-up in the country. Earlier they were 14. The other four are Great Rann of Kuchchh, Cold Deserts of Western Himalayas, Seshanchalam Hills and Panna Biosphere Reserve.At present, 9 biosphere reserves of india are included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves of UNESCO. Four are mentioned in the text and the other 5 are Nokrek in Meghalaya, Pachmari in Madhya Pradesh, Simlipal in Odisha, Achanakmar-Amarkantak (Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh) and Nicobar Islands.
