Finding Value Using Substitution

To find solutions for a linear equation in two variables we can follow the following steps:

  • Assuming a value for one variable
  • Then substituting the value of that variable in the equation and solving for the second variable.
  • This pair of value for the two variables is the solution for the equation.
  • Illustration: Find a pair of solution for the equation 3x+ 2y= 8

    Solution: To find the solution for this equation

    Let x= 2

    Putting the value of x in the equation we get

    3(2)+2y= 8

    6+2y=8

    2y=8-6

    2y=2

    y=1

    (2,1) is a solution for this equation.

    Illustration: In a linear equation 10x-3y= 2. If the value of x = 2 find the value of y

    Solution: Putting the value of x in the equation

    10x-3y=2

    10(2)-3y=2

    20-3y=2

    -3y= 2-20

    -3y= -18

    y=6
