Endoplasmic Reticulum

Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)

The endoplasmic reticulum is a network of tube-like structures running through the cytoplasm. Some parts are connected to the nuclear membrane, while others are connected to the cell membrane. The Endoplasmic Reticulum membrane is similar in structure to plasma membrane. It occurs in Three forms; cisternae, vesicles and tubules. It is of two types: Rough and Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum.

  • Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (RER) : It contains ribosomal substances because of which its surface is rough. The ribosomes are the sites of protein synthesis. RER s mainly formed of cisternae.
