Fluid Connective Tissue

Concept Explanation

Fluid Connective Tissue

Connective tissue provides support, binds together, and protects tissues and organs of the body. Connective tissue consist of cells, protein fibres and amorphous ground substance. Blood and lymph are both fluid connective tissues present in our body.

Blood and lymph are the two fluid connective tissues. The liquid matrix of blood, as you know, is called plasma. The three types of cells suspended in the plasma are erythrocyte or red blood corpuscles (RBC), leucocytes or white blood corpuscles (WBC) and platelets or thrombocytes. Proteins, salts and hormones are dissolved in the plasma.

Of the three types of blood cells, erythrocytes or RBC are the most abundant. Their characteristic feature is the presence of haemoglobin. It is a protein that carries oxygen and carbon dioxide and gives blood its red colour. These cells are biconcave discs without a nucleus. These cells are made in the bone marrow and are replaced from time to time.

Lymph Lymph is transparent, usually slightly yellowish fluid  found within the lymphatic vessels, and collected in tissues in all part of the body. It differs from blood as it comes from the extracellular fluid surrounding cells. It consists of interstitial fluid and lymphocytes. The fluid around all the cells in the body is collected in lymph ducts, or small vessels which transport the lymph around. The lymph has a number of different components, which varies by species.

Difference between Blood and Lymph

S.No.           Blood Lymph
1. Blood is a viscous reddish coloured fluid. Lymph is a thin, light yellow coloured fluid.
2. Blood contains erythrocytes and blood platelets. Erythrocytes and blood platelets are absent in lymph
3. Its main function is to transport substances like nutrients, gases and wastes in the body. It functions as a middle man between tissues and blood. It brings carbon dioxide and wastes from tissues to blood and nutrients, oxygen etc from blood to tissues.
