Germination of Seed

  • Seed germination may be defined as the fundamental process by which different plant species grow from a single seed into a plant. This process influences both crop yield and quality of the crop.
  • A common example of seed germination is the sprouting of a seedling from a seed of an angiosperm or gymnosperm.
  • The process of seed germination starts with absorbing water through micropyle. The parts present in seed gets mobilised by the activation of enzymes like amylase, lipase, proteinase and transported to embryo.
  • The radicle grows first, followed by growth of either epicotyl or hypocotyl. Radicle is basically the precursor of root.
  • After that plumule grows. Plumule grows and give rise to shoot.
  • Seed germination can be of three types :-
