Angiosperms

Angiosperms (Greek Angio-cover, spermae-seed) : It is the sub division of kingdom plantae.

  • Angiosperms, or flowering plants, bear seeds enclosed in a fruit (or the ovules are inside the ovary).
  • Angiosperms are the plant that have the most advanced vascular system. The vascular tissue in the plants is composed of complex permanent tissues called as xylem and phloem.
  • These plants have both tracheids and vessels.
  • They are the most diverse of all plant groups. Their diversity and evolution have been influenced by animals.
  • Sporophyll are aggregated to form flower. The female reproductive part of the flower is called as carpel. It consist of ovary, style and stigma. Carpel is basically the mergasporophyll and the ovary is the megasporangia. The male reproductive part is called as stamen which consist of anther, filament. Here, the anther act as the micorsporangium bearing microspores.
  • The seeds they bear contains an embryo together with nourishment-containing cotyledons.
  • On the basis of number of cotyledons angiosperms are divided into monocotyledons and dicotyledons.
