Cell Division

Concept Explanation

Cell Division

Cell division is the process in which parent cell divides into daughter cells. These daughter cells further divide to form new daughter cells.Cell division is actually a part of cell cycle. The cell cycle is a four stage process in which the cell increases in size, copies its DNA, prepares to divide, and divides.  Cell division is a also a method of reproduction.

There are basically two types of cell divisions :- Mitosis and Meiosis

Mitosis:

Mitosis is the process of cell division in which a cell divide to form two daughter cells. Before division of cell there occur duplication of genetic material(DNA) and cytoplasm which is distributed equally among the daughter cells. Mitosis division is also called as equational division because the number of chromosomes in each daughter cells are equal to there parents. Mitosis is observed in almost all the body’s cells, including eyes, skin, hair, and muscle cells.

Meiosis:

Meiosis is a type of cell division in which parent cell divide to give rise  four daughter cells. This division is also know as reductional division because in this type of division number of chromosomes in each daughter cell are half then that of the parent cell. This type of division is seen in formation of gametes like sperms and egg.

Cell Cycle:

A cell cycle is a series of events that takes place in a cell as it grows and divides. The cell cycle is divided into two stages :-

 Interphase or Preparatory Phase:

Interphase is the longest stage of the cell cycle. During this phase, the cell acquires nutrients, creates and uses proteins and other molecules, and starts the process of cell division by replicating the DNA. Interphase is divided into three distinct stages  : Gap 1(G1), Synthesis(S) , Gap 2(G2) and Gap 0 (G0).

Mitosis phase or M phase:

This is the phase where cell division occur or cell divide into daughter cells. These phase includes cytokinesis( cytoplasm division) and karyokinesis (nucleus division). Mitosis phase is also divided into four stages : Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase and Telophase.
